Volunteering with the Toledo Fire Department is an opportunity to serve your neighbors, build valuable skills, and become a part of a team dedicated to protecting our community. Whether you’re interested in emergency response or supporting outreach efforts, there is a place for you here. No prior experience is required — we provide the training, support, and mentorship to help you succeed.
FIRE
EMS
Community
You do not need to choose a specific pathway right away or know exactly what interests you most. Many volunteers discover their passion by gaining exposure during trainings and working along side crews. Whether you choose Fire, EMS, Community, or the combination of any of the three, we will help you find the role that fits your strengths, interests, and goals.
Firefighting
Firefighting volunteers response to a wide range of emergencies, including interior and exterior structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle fires, vehicles extrication, and rescue incidents. As a firefighter, you will train in essential fire suppression skills such as hose handling, pump operations and engineering, interior fire attack, ventilation, use of hydraulic rescue tools, and operating with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBAs). Through hands-on training and real-world experiences, you will learn what it takes to become a confident and capable firefighter while serving your community.
EMS
EMS volunteers provide critical emergency medical and pre-hospital care to patients in need. Our training includes both Basic and Advanced Life Support skills, along with support roles in emergency medical response. Volunteers response to a variety of medical emergencies, including transporting patients to local emergency departments. Training opportunities include CPR, first aid, patient assessment, airway management, and other lifesaving interventions. No prior medical experience is required.
Community Support
Community volunteers support the Volunteer Firefighter/EMS Association and the Toledo Fire Department through outreach and engagement efforts that strengthen our connection to the community. These volunteers assist with senior health and safety education programs, fundraising initiatives, community events, sports parades, school field trips, and other public activities. This pathway is ideal for individuals who want to support the department’s mission without the commitment to emergency response or operational training.
